How To Get Rid Of Weed Smell

June 10, 2021

It’s one of the greatest elements of any session. An all-encompassing sensory experience that is always comforting in its familiarity. It’s the musky & dank soul of any proper hot-boxing. Can you think of any more pleasing scent than the warm, earthy smell of fresh weed? We can’t.

But that doesn’t mean enjoying the unique fragrant terpenes of your strain is always as easy as stopping to smell the roses. In certain situations, the pungent herbal aromas can be an inconvenience, if not a downright liability. You may appreciate the subtle citrus notes of your Sour Diesel bud- but your neighbors, family members, pets, or boss absolutely my not.

So what’s a poor stoner in need of some discretion to do then? Turns out, plenty. These days there are all kinds of solutions out there that can help to get rid of weed smell in a pinch. We’ll first take a look at what causes that unique scent, followed by a rundown of our favorite, most effective ways to eliminate the odorous haze.

Why Does Weed Smell Like… Skunk?

When you get right down to it, terpenes are the main factor that influences the smell of your bud. Cannabis terpenes are the specific compounds found within your flower that give each strain its unique flavor and scent profiles. There are over 120 different terpenes that can exist in an almost limitless amount of combinations.

The specific terpene that makes that familiar ‘skunky’ weed smell is called myrcene. This is one of the most abundant (and therefore dominant) terpenes found in most weed strains. Other crops that contain myrcene are lemongrass, hops, and wild thyme. It’s no coincidence that these plants all share similarly musky/ earthy flavors and aromas.

One other significant variable that determines how potent your stash smells is when the greens were harvested. Flower harvested at full maturity will generally be more aromatic, especially when smoked. Plants harvested earlier in the season, before full maturity, will have more subtle scents.

As with all things in life, the best cure for this particularly smelly problem is an ounce of prevention. Though there are plenty of products and DIY options to mask or eliminate your bud’s odors, it will always be much easier to minimize the smells before they start.

Preventing Strong Scents Before You Smoke

We explained above how cannabis terpenes influence the aroma profile & potency of your strain. Keeping that in mind, you can find strains that are notably light on fragrance. Specific strains like Northern Lights, Blue Mystic, and Jack Herer are noted for being on the lighter side of dankness.

How you choose to consume your greens also plays a role. Dry herb and concentrate vaporizers are a much more discreet option than a joint- obviously. With joints, the burning paper will contribute toward a more “smokey” smell. Edibles (once consumed) leave no lingering smells.

If you still prefer to put a little bit of fire on your greens, smoking out of a pipe is typically a lot less pungent or lingering than a bong would be.

Eliminating Herbal Odors After You Have Already Smoked

If you’ve already smoked and need to get rid of the smell, there are many reliable products out there that keep it simple. The Smokebuddy Personal Air Filter is one of our most popular odor-eliminating products we carry.

All you need to do is exhale your smoke through this portable mouth filter, and the internal carbon filter will take care of the rest for you. Simple.

Odor-eliminating candles, such as the Smoke Odor Exterminator 13oz Candles, are highly effective at killing the lingering smells after your session and come in an impressive range of flavored scents.

If you find yourself in a situation where you need some coverage quickly, you can never go wrong with building yourself a sploof.

Sploofs work wonders as a make-shift smoke filter. All you need is an empty paper towel or toilet paper roll and some dryer sheets. Simply stuff the empty roll with dryer sheets, and exhale through it like you would a Smokebuddy filter. You’d be surprised by how well the dryer sheets work to mask the smokey smell completely. Be careful, though- dryer sheets are very flammable.

Discreet Weed Storage

Weed, of course, does not only smell when you smoke it. Sometimes you also need to be able to fly beneath the radar when transporting or storing your bud. We’re here to say that the days of the little brown paper sack are over. There’s simply no substitute for a good stash jar.

Quality jars such as the ones by Smart Stash keep your greens as fresh as possible while not containing the odors within. If you need something even more discreet, the deceptive stash jars by Diversion Safes will have even you fooled about what’s inside.

Final Thoughts & Common Courtesies

We’ll sign off here with one last thought on the matter. There are so many cheap and effective ways to deal with the smoke you create that it’s really up to you to be aware of your surroundings and act accordingly. Go ahead and spark that joint up, just make sure you aren’t forcing that delicious flowery aroma on anyone who may not appreciate it.

Be nice- give a damn.
